    Goshinkan-Ryu Jujitsu

    About Japanese Jujitsu

Originally the hand-to-hand combat art of the Samurai, Japanese Jujitsu is taught to Police and Military personnel world-wide as one of the most effective means of controlling violent subjects.

Arguably the most devastating and effective system of self-defense, ju jitsu is often taught to law enforcement personnel and personal security professionals. You will never see a fancy, high-flying kick or intricate and flashy sequence of moves taught in our schools, instead you will learn immediately usable and effective self-defense techniques and tactics design for one purpose — to keep you, your family and possessions safe.

Skills learned in this program: Stances, Breakfalls, Blocks, Hand Techniques, Kicking, Takedowns, After Throws, Hold Downs, Follow-Throughs, Hold Escapes, Escort and Removals, Weapons Disarming, Pressure Point Control, Joint Locking, Grappling and Restraints.

Not being in a confrontation is ideal, so learning how to avoid them whenever possible is our first consideration and strategy. However, physical confrontations do happen and from the first class you are learning how to mitigate your risk, as well as position yourself to remove yourself from the situation safely. Should you find yourself in a physical confrontation you will be armed with proven and effective self-defense techniques and tactics to help you stop the attack and prevent further attack.

  • Shogun Black Stripe Program™

    About the Program

Our Junior Shogun™ Black Stripe Program is a martial arts program for boys and girls ages 8 – 13, and is based on research and education with the combination of personal safety skills and ju jitsu techniques.

This program is based on a traditional stripe color belt system and when the student reaches the last level in the Junior Shogun program they are placed in the Junior Shogun™ Black Stripe Program. The program is very similar to the teens and adults ju jitsu programs however it still utilizes the striping system.

The Junior Shogun™ Black Stripe Program consists of the following:

    • Advanced Stances Break-falls
    • Advanced Blocks
    • Advanced Hand Techniques
    • Advanced Kicking Techniques
    • Advanced Take-downs
    • Advanced After Throws
    • Advanced Hold Downs
    • Advanced Hold Escapes
    • Self-Defense

    Notes for parents:

At Goshinkan Ju Jitsu, we recognize that young children are developing the physical and mental skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. We try to facilitate this development through the use of gross motor skills and curriculum that develop coordination and focus. Your child will be challenged to perform new techniques and learn about ju jitsu and themselves.

Our Martial Arts program is not for sport and it is not a drill camp. We are focused on self-defense and safety. Along with our self-defense techniques, we teach awareness and personal safety. Our environment is friendly and fun however, children are expected to respect their teachers and peers, focus on techniques and lessons being taught and review their safety skills at home.

As the parent of a Junior Shogun, we ask that you support your child as he or she develops new skills and learns new concepts.

  • Junior Leader™ Program

    About the Program

Our Junior Leader™ Program is a program for boys and girls ages 8 – 13, students are hand picked by black belt instructors to participate in the junior leader program.

This program helps build leadership and strong ju jitsu skills beyond the regular Ju Jitsu Programs. The Junior Leader™ is lent a blue Ju Jitsu Gi embroidered with a Junior Leader logo. The student does not own this Gi as it belongs to the Alberta Ju Jitsu Association. Junior Leaders will wear the blue Gi only when helping with Mini Bushi™ Program and Little Samurai™ Program. After these classes they are to change into their traditional white top, they are allowed to keep the blue pants in during their regular class.

The Junior Leader is expected to assist the Mini Bushi™ and Little Samurai™ students with the following:

    • Dojo Tour
    • Greeting Mini Bushi™ and Little Samurai™
    • Line up and bow in
    • Helping put on and tie their belts
    • Assisting with holding of pads
    • Assisting with keeping the dojo clean

    Notes for parents:

At Goshinkan Ju Jitsu, we recognize that some young children are developing leadership skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. We will invite kids to attend our Junior Leader™ class once monthly for 15 minutes. This class is to assist students who are in the Junior Leader™ Program or assess other kids that might be good candidates for the Junior Leader™ Program.

This program is free and there is not cost for the blue Gi, we only ask that the students keep the Gi clean.

  • Teen Ju Jitsu

For 12 to 15 Year Olds

    About

The Teen Program is a bridge between our Junior Shogun and Adult Program. Typically young students migrate to “adult” classes too early as they are still quite small in comparison, but are ready to learn the full system of Japanese Jujitsu.

Should you find yourself in a physical confrontation you will be armed with proven and effective self-defense techniques and tactics to help you stop the attack and prevent further attack.

For girls and boys aged 12 (sometimes 11) to 15 this program is based on a traditional color belt system (White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple and Brown). Mudansha Gradings (colour belt gradings) at this age happen every six months.

    About

Our Little Samurai™ Program is not just a martial arts program for boys and girls ages 5 – 7, it is a step-by-step danger awareness program.

    What will my child learn?
The Little Samurai Program teaches children how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations, practical and effective escape techniques, how to use their voice and what to do in the event of an emergency situation, but they also learn basic physical techniques such as how to fall correctly, punching, kicking and escape techniques. It’s much more than a typical martial arts program – the Little Samurai Program encourages individual growth and character development in a fun and structured environment.

Your child will be learning one belt level each Semester. Skills taught in the dojo are not just physical, but also focus on assertiveness and awareness. Learning and building basic motor-skills through fun and repetition.

Our curriculum also extends into the home with Home Skills such as choosing a Codeword between children and parents, door and telephone safety, who are Safe Strangers and who are Dangerous Strangers.
